Optimal Community Size

"Although humans are capable of living in structurally diverse societies, our communities, even in the digital world, have a distinctive layered structure with successive cumulative layer sizes of 15, 50, 150, 500 and 1500..."

This is the observation of one distinguished group of scientists, which you can read at:

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S109051381730209X

The questions that follow are: If we see repetitive patterns of unconscious groupings in distinct sizes, why not design our neighborhood blocks around the same sizes? How about citizen action committees? How about corporate governance? The applications of well choreographed human interaction are boundless.

It is time to stop having conferences of 200 people - unless you are determined to overwhelm participants. Make it big enough that fracturing is natural, or small enough (150), that you actually start to build a community.
